Dear Beatrice,
Yesterday I have lighted a candle for Ernest. I am so sorry you haven't been able to honour him by giving him a known grave. But he'll not be forgotten, which is also important.
Yesterday and the day before we joined the commemorations of Operation Market Garden. Saturday I layed my seven roses for the seven Royal Canadian Engineers at the Engineers Monument in Driel/Arnhem. One of those seven does not have a known grave either and another is burried at the Groesbeek Cemetery. On our way home I have lighted candles for them as well as Ernest. Although I know Ernest did not die during this operation; I wanted to light him a candle too. See photo attached.
It was a touching service at the Airborne Cemetery in Oosterbeek, don't know if you had the chance to visit it. Only a handfull of veterans were able to join this.
I'll send some photos in next email for you to give you an idea.
Big hug from (today stormy) Holland,
Alice
