This morning I met with Alice, Jan van Eck and Gerard Hendriks, President of the Royal Canadian Legion.
First of all we talked about Ernest and the whole story regarding our search and the outcome. Gerard was very interested and came forward with the idea to continue our search with the help of people he knows in the Netherlands and in Germany. He would like to know the regiment of the German medic, Karl Missbach. I guess I'm going to have to write a letter to Christine, his daughter, to find out.
We talked about the possibilities of a monument. According to Jan, that should not be a problem. The Mayor is very much in favour of this, and when he gets the proposal from us about location and time, he'll support it. We'll see about that tomorrow. We'll suggest to him the location I showed to you on google maps, right at the top of the dike when coming from Leuth. We want to suggest to have the opening-ceremony on either the 10th or 11th of June 2014. The celebrations in France will be on the 5th and 6th of June, so it should be possible to travel from France to the Netherlands before the 10th. The idea is to also try and invite Scottish Canadians that might be traveling from France-Normandy to the Netherlands. The question of Gerard linked to this is: what was Ernest's regiments' name ?
After the approval of the Mayor we have the following to do:
We'll have to think about the content of the plaque that will be put up; the text and pictures. It has to be short and in two languages (Dutch and English). Gerard thinks he can have it made through the military people he knows in the Netherlands; "it might cost us just a bottle of good whiskey", he said.
We'll have to think about who will be invited and how we organise that - especially financially.
In February Gerard will be in Brussels for the official opening of the Liberation route (http://www.liberationroute.com/lr/wat-is-liberation-route/). This is a route the allies followed from Normandy, through Belgium, all the way to Arnhem/Nijmegen that is marked. On the way you'll find huge boulders with QR-codes (or something similar) through which with your smart phone you can hear a 3-5 minutes story linked to that specific area.
Gerard wants to try and include Ernest's story also into the Liberation route. This would mean that a big boulder will be placed near the small monument and there you can hear the story about Leuth and how a soldier (Ernest) died while supporting the liberation of the Netherlands. To get approval for this and organise this as well, will of course take more time and won't be finalised in June. But it would be a great addition to the monument. I have attached the story of Ernest as I e-mailed it to Gerard.
In the meantime the search for Ernest continues, which I think, is very good news !
